ADVICE:: Autumn Planting Time
Now is the time in South East Queensland to be preparing and planting flowering annuals for a winter/spring display.

The gardens should be prepared by adding a generous amount of ultra grow humus, (also called enriched compost) to your gardens and digging into the top 100 to 150mm of soil.

Spend some time deciding what type of garden display you want. Is it to be purely a feast for the eyes or would you like some flowers to pick?

Now watch your garden over a weekend to determine which parts get more than 50% of shade and those that get almost full sun.

Visit your local nursery or garden centre and talk to their plant people about the types of flowers that they find are successful in your area.

Some suggestions that we have found work very well in our gardens are:

SHADE AREAS::
•
Pansies and Violas, either as mixed colours or as big blocks of
   single colours
• Impatiens dwarf and double types. Can sometimes be a problem because
   they seed readily but if you enjoy gardening and don't mind the odd spot
   of weeding them out these are invaluable for colour in a shade garden.
   Don't be frightened to give them a good haircut down to 100mm from the
   ground when they look untidy. They quickly recover.
• Primula malacoides pink, purple and white.
• Plant close together for a mass of flowers.

SUNNY TO DAPPLED SHADE GARDENS::
•
Snap dragons. These come in both dwarf and tall forms. Planted in groups
   of 5 to 7 amongst smaller seedlings these look great.
• Stocks. Treat the same way as snap dragons.
• Dianthus, ideal for the front of the garden, under other shrubs or roses
• Petunias, ideal massed in mixed colours or select single colours that
   complement other shrubs in the garden.
